Customers can be published individually from their customer records, enabled in bulk through Customer Mass Download and Upload, or published automatically when they are created in POS. Before the initial synchronisation, review customer email addresses and resolve duplicates because the email address is used to match customer records between Retail Express and Shopify.
In this video we look at the synchronisation of your existing Retail Express customers into Shopify, including automatically, in bulk and as new customers are created in POS.

Retail Express customers can be synchronised to Shopify individually, in bulk or automatically when they are created in POS. Preparing the customer database before the initial synchronisation helps reduce duplicate records and ensures customers are mapped using the correct email address.
Customer Synchronisation Methods
Customers can be synchronised from Retail Express to Shopify in three ways:
- Individually from the customer record
- In bulk using Customer Mass Download and Customer Mass Upload
- Automatically when a new customer is created in POS
Each method enables the Publish to Shopify setting against the relevant customer record.
Preparing for the Initial Synchronisation
Complete the initial bulk customer synchronisation soon after connecting Retail Express and Shopify.
Before synchronising the customers, review the customer database and resolve duplicate email addresses.
Retail Express and Shopify use the customer’s email address to match records between the two systems. Customers without a valid email address, or customers sharing duplicate email addresses, may not synchronise as expected.
Activating Shopify Customer Accounts
When an existing Retail Express customer is published to Shopify, Shopify creates an inactive customer account.
The customer is not automatically notified when the inactive account is created.
When the customer later attempts to create an online account, Shopify can send an activation request so they can verify and activate the existing customer record rather than creating another account.
Publishing an Individual Customer
In Back Office, navigate to: Customers > Customers
Search for the required customer and open their customer record.
Locate the Publish to Shopify section and select the required Shopify store.
Select Save Changes.
The customer is queued to synchronise with the selected Shopify store.
Publishing Customers in Bulk
To publish multiple customers, navigate to:
Customers > Customer Management > Customer Mass Download
Start a new download, then apply filters to select the customers you want to publish.
Generate the download and select Download CSV when the file is ready.
Open the CSV file in Microsoft Excel or another compatible spreadsheet application.
Locate the column named Publish To: followed by the Shopify store address. Enter TRUE for each customer who should be published.
Save the completed CSV file.
Uploading the Customer Changes
Return to Back Office and navigate to:
Customers > Customer Management > Customer Mass Upload
Upload the updated CSV file and map the file columns to the corresponding Retail Express fields.
Continue through the validation process and resolve any errors displayed on the screen.
After the upload is completed, the selected customers have the Shopify publishing option enabled. Their details will be included in the next Shopify synchronisation.
Automatically Publishing New POS Customers
Retail Express can automatically enable Shopify publishing whenever a new customer is created in POS.
This removes the need to open each new customer record and select the Shopify store manually.
Configuring Automatic Customer Publishing
In Back Office, navigate to:
Settings > POS Settings > Customer Settings
Locate Default Publish to Shopify to Enabled for new Customers.
Select the checkbox for the required Shopify store, then select Save Changes.
New customers created in POS will now be enabled for publishing to that Shopify store. Log out of POS completely and log back in so the updated Customer Settings take effect.
