Overview
Structured data (also known as schema or microdata) is information used by search engines (such as Google) to better understand the content on web pages. This data can include information such as:
- Product Name
- Product Price
- Product Availability
- Product Reviews
- and much more
Webstore themes contain structured data by default, and will generally include all fields that Google considers as required. Additional recommended fields can be included in your theme templates to send further information, but are not required.
It’s also important to note that Google compares the structured data found on your webstore to the information supplied from other sources (e.g. a Google Shopping feed) to ensure it is consistent. If your data has inconsistencies this can lead to issues with other Google products like Google Shopping.

Structured Data Errors
Google updates their structured data requirements periodically, resulting in data that was previously valid can later be flagged as invalid. To bring your site back in line with Google requirements you are required to update your webstore theme/design templates.
Structured data issues will generally be flagged by Google Search Console as an error or a warning. Google requires errors to be fixed, while warnings will indicate a recommended but not required update.
The Google Structured Data Testing Tool is a useful tool for locating errors and validating your structured data, as well as previewing features such as rich snippets in Google Search.
If an error has been flagged for one of your pages in Search Console, run the URL through the Structured Data Testing Tool. The tool will provide more information on the errors and the location of the existing code your webstore templates.
Update Structured Data
You will need to maintain the structured data for your website as Google’s requirements change. If you are comfortable editing theme templates, the Skeletal theme contains a working example of valid structured data which you can use as a reference to update your template code.
If you require structured data updates and don’t have your own developer, you can request a quote from an approved Maropost Commerce Cloud partner to perform the update for you.
