Today, I want to share a handy tip on importing product specifics that can save you a lot of time and effort.
Â
Imagine you run an e-commerce store that sells a wide range of Computer components and want to update the product specifics in your inventory. You have a CSV file with all the specific details for each product, such as screen size, processor type, and storage capacity, and you want to make sure this information is accurately reflected in your Neto product listings.
Â
When it comes to handling specifics, Neto provides a straightforward way to manage and organize your data. Here's how you can do it:
- Understand Specifics Format: Specifics are saved in the database as "[Specific Type 1]:[Specific Value 1];[Specific Type 2]:[Specific Value 2];..." all within a single field called "Specifics." For example, "Screen Size:15.6 inches; Processor Type: Intel Core i7; Storage Capacity:512GB SSD."
- Simple Export: If you're using Neto’s Simple Export, you'll notice that it splits these specifics into different columns, making it easy to work with. You'll see column headers like "Specifics Type 1," "Specifics Value 1," and so on, up to a maximum of 3 RANDOM specific type/value pairs which are not guaranteed to be first three.
- Simple Import: To reimport your data with these split columns back into the "Specifics" field automatically, you should use the Simple Import option.
- Complex Import Wizard Tool: We highly recommend using the Complex Import Wizard Tool, you'll need to manually map these specific columns back into the "Specifics" field. You can find step-by-step instructions in the help articles:

Pro Tip
Neto offers several import behaviors to cater to different needs: "Add New Data Only," "Update Old Data Only," and a combination of both, "Add/Update Data" (which adds if it doesn't exist and updates if it does).
Â
When it comes to individual component update behaviors, there are two options: "Add/Update Existing Record" and "Replace Existing Record." In the case of "Replace," the old data, including specifics, is removed, and only the information from your import file is added.
Â
If you wish to replace the old specifics with new ones, essentially performing a 'clean' import, follow these steps:
- Start by importing your CSV file using the product import wizard. You can refer to the article "How to Import Product Specifics" for a detailed guide.
- Map the fields in your CSV file as required, ensuring they align with your product data.
- In the Update Options section, look for the blue text to expand the options.
- Scroll down until you find "Product Variation & Specific Options."
- Under "Product Specific Update Options," select the Update option. Change it to "Replace Existing Record" to perform a clean update from your CSV file. If you don't want to replace the existing data, leave it as is.
- Proceed by clicking "Next" and complete the import process as usual. However, it's crucial to always test the process with a few lines of data first to ensure everything works as expected.
