As an online retailer, it’s very likely that at some point you’re going to need to change the URL of a page on your webstore. This may be due to
- restructuring your site (e.g., streamlining your categories)
- “Removing” the page for a product or service you no longer offer
- the old URL being too long or confusing, or there being a misspelling that makes it difficult for users to find easily
- updating your webstore domain name to reflect a change of business name.
Simply changing a URL can lead to Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) issues, negatively affecting the page ranking in search results. Additionally, links to the page from other pages or websites, and even information printed on marketing materials, will potentially present the user with a 404 Page Not Found when used. You can mitigate these issues by adding a 301 Redirect in your store’s Neto Control Panel.
Whether you need to set up a single redirect or are making several changes at once, setting up a 301 redirect for any page on your Neto store is relatively simple. However, it’s also easy to miss one small detail that will prevent the redirect from working as you expect.
One very important thing to note with Neto 301 Redirects: the page you are redirecting from needs to be made inactive. You can edit the page itself (the Active checkbox will generally be in the upper right).
Or you can set multiple pages inactive from the associated listing page e.g. PRODUCTS > View Products for product pages. Mark the check box to the left of each item you want to set inactive, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the With X Selected button and select the option to set inactive.
