Is there a way to have Cross sell just pick products at Random?

I am using cross sell on my items so that I have 4 show up on each product page. But its time consuming to manually map and products get added and disabled and i always forget to update the cross sell links.

Is there a way to just have Neto show 4 products at random in cross sell??

Thanks Curtis, dropped that code in and it works - but its not random. ie it loads the same 4 'random' products on every product as you move around the site? Exprected behavior is when you move to a new product - you see 4 new random products?

I just hopped around between some products on your site and I get a pretty random mix. Maybe try an incognito/private browser session to see if cache could be affecting what you're seeing.

Hi Curtis - I turned the code off, So you are seeing the standard cross sell products that are configured. (needed to configure the layout in css once its working) Is there a switch that needs to be used with %random to tell it how often to refresh the cache or where ever it pulls the data from? Try replacing the Random Products function with this:

If that doesn't work it might be best to reach out to an experienced web development partner for advice.

Hi Curtis, I tried that code and same result - the result wasn?t consistent sometimes it displayed 1 product, sometimes 2, sometimes 4! Played around with a few of the function parameters, like limit:'4'%. With no luck So then I decided to just drop in the random products code (below) - which really should be ideal. However it had the same problem ? showed the same 4 products on any page. The standard random_products code is the way to go. Yes, you are running into caching issues. The entire product page will be cached, so multiple loads only show the random products generated on the first request.

To solve this there is a special B@SE tag to exclude a section from the cache and load it later. Try wrapping the entire random_product section with [%ajax_loader%] [%/ajax_loader%]

Just be aware you'll actually see the page load, then the random products appear a second or so later. You may need to allow for this in your page design. It looks like it won't be an issue with your current design.

I don't think that [%random%] tag is working the way any of us expect. @Curtis Perri? can you please escalate this to the front-end team? I'd like to know if the results of the [%random%] tag would be cached even if fetched via AJAX, and if so how to prevent that caching.

I thought I'd try out the random code to have a small list of random products on a page and I'm coming across the same issues as above, where no matter what browser or how many refreshes I do, the "random" selection of products doesn't change once it's decided on some. I tried the [%ajax_loader%] suggestion as above with the same result.

Yeah I give up. I think the tag is broken, possibly from when caching was introduced. @Curtis Perri? will have to ask the developers.
