better product queries - how?

I have learned how to use categories to locate groups of stock codes.

For example ...adhesive-paper/face/matte

This seems to work well but when I get the records from the above query, I still need to add another parameter for example 'colour' so that I might just get the red products that are adhesive-paper with a matte face.

Can you suggest how I can get an additional criteria for the search?

or go about this in a different way to get the result I am looking for?

I assume you're filtering for products in the control panel? You can enter multiple filters if need.

Where is a colour of the product stored? If it's as an item specific, I don't believe you can filter on that. But you might have the information somewhere else you can use, like in the name or SKU.

Also be aware of the Is Parent / Has Parent filters, the affect whether you are seeing child products (variations) in the filter results.

My overall intention is to work out what links I could develop to help users find what they want, for example selling printable papers, including words that users would likely be searching for like 'Brochures', 'Presentation' etc etc as well as the formal categories that are related to features. eg A4, synthetic...

I was hoping that Neto supported conventions of ...category/sub-category/&specific=red and the like.

I was looking at using a specific for the RED.

I have used the control panel but also I have just used the URLs that Neto uses to get to categories.

Neto does follow a similar convention to that for product/category URLs. If you set up a specific for Colour you'll be able to filter for it on the category page. Just apply this filter and you'll see the URL change to include the specific filter. For example this is a direct link to a specific filter:

https://test.neto.com.au/sample-product-category-2/sample-sub-category-2/?rf=va&va=2

What are you hoping to use these URLs for? There might be a better overall way to organize the site.

This is another example link: http://sample.neto.com.au/category-two/sub-category-three/?rf=va&va=36

But the main point is that you don't have to construct those URLs yourself. Just go to the category on your site and select a filter. You'll see the URL in your browser change to include the variation filter. You can use that URL anywhere for direct access to an applied filter.
