When a customer is making an online order it would be an advantage for them to chose between backorder and or notify when back in stock. We have some customers who would select backorder, and be notified when back in stock, but then others who would like to be notified when back in stock. At present it is one or the other, but this is done in setup and the customer doesn't have the choice.
