Changing the login destination/landing page from "My account"?

When customers log in, we'd like them to be directed to www.store.tld/arbitrarylandingpage/ for example instead of the "My Account" page. It'd also be useful to direct customers differently according to the value of a custom user field.

I've had no luck finding any suggestion of such a feature in the documentation. Does anyone know if & how this is achievable?

That's an interesting challenge. I'd say what you're after is possible with some thought. It will require major template changes, so you'll need development experience or a Maropost Partner. Let me give you three options.

What do you want to show on your landing page? Something like a banner ad or promo? Could it just be added to the header of the My Account page, maybe with a way to dismiss it? This would be easy, and could be tailored to the customer using a custom field as you suggested.

If you really need a separate landing page, my first suggestion would be to change the target of the "login" button on your site header. Instead of the My Account page, you could set that to an info page which has "Require Login" set ON. That will then prompt the user to log in, then forward them to the page with your content. From there you could have a button to go on to the real My Account page. Pretty simple change.

If you ALWAYS want to force users to go through that landing page, no matter where they are logging in (login prompts can come from protected pages, for example) then you could change the "redirect" hidden field in the login.template.html file to point to your landing page. That should override the usual behaviour of redirecting to the page they were trying to access and instead send them to your landing page. I think that could cause UX issues though so I'd use it with caution.

All those options could make use of the custom field, the details just depend on what you want to achieve. An experienced developer should know how to handle it.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply Erik, good to have your insight on this matter.

The first option isn't practical for our needs, but I'll spend a while checking the others. I'd already considered using the login form's redirect argument and since reading your reply I've tested it and found it works fine as a blunt-force solution for the general case.

I've got a few more methods to test before choosing one to go with so I'll check back later with any learnings.
