Calculate cubic for shipping

We are having issues where the cubic for shipping is wrong on product. I know the cause of the problem, it's because staff have changed measurements for shipping and have not clicked the "calculate cubic" button to do the calculation. The thing is, i'm wondering what this is even needed? I can not think of any situation where you would want a cubic different to the measurements, that just doesn't make sense. Therefore my question is why even have this? Why not have the system automatically calculate the cubic directly from the measurements? It just seem to me to be a way of unnecessarily risking introduction of bad data, without any benefit in the way it's built.
