New order status for pre-orders

Since adding pre-orders to my business flow, I've discovered a need for a dedicated order status for them. Currently we have "On Hold". However, this Status is shared with numerous other orders in the daily workflow (invalid address, shipping total inconsistencies, etc). This is leading to unnecessary work and problems. A dedicated status to place pre-orders in avoids having to sort them out of the "On Hold" orders every time I process the On Holds. I use a workaround of placing pre-orders into a status I don't normally use, but its definitely a workaround not a solution. It would be far better to automatically have pre-order orders placed direct into a "Pre-orders" status.
