Back Button should not be available after a sales transaction is complete

As a cashier, I shouldn't be able to go back into a transaction once a payment has been made. Currently there is a back button, and some staff have gone back in, undone the payment and continued the transaction. However we found our expected POS cash totals and report cash totals weren't balancing. I have investigated this issue with Rory. Why does the function to go back into and undo a payment on a sale exist if a return is required anyway?
